SUMMARY:Book Group Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Discussion of The Brain\, edited by Kayt Sukel and How God Ch
anges Your Brain by Andrew Newberg and Mark Robert Waldman\n\nHi\, Book Gr
oupies - Hopefully your calendars already are marked for our next meeting\
, SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 25\, 1:30 PM in the THIRD FLOOR MEETING ROOM at the P
ETOSKEY LIBRARY.\n\nAlso hopefully\, by now you’re well into the two boo
ks selected for that meeting: THE BRAIN\, edited by Kayt Sukel (99 pp) and
HOW GOD CHANGES YOUR BRAIN by Andrew Newberg and Mark Robert Waldman (333
pp). Of course that is twice the number of books we usually read\, but to
gether the page total falls short of some individual titles selected – m
ost recently\, Karen Armstrong’s Fields of Blood.\n\nIt should be noted
that How God Changes Your Brain is NOT a religious tract or attempt to con
vert anyone. To quote Amazon.com\, “. . .the authors make a case for the
interface between spirituality and neuroscience.” Although very readabl
e\, the book I found to be very stimulating and challenging. The Brain pre
sents multiple views about the make-up of the brain and its functioning. S
ince there is no “author”\, it can be difficult to find.\n\nTo me it m
akes sense that the discussion be facilitated by the persons who recommend
ed these books: e.g. GG Jacobsen (How God Changes Your Brain) and Gus Uhli
ch (The Brain).\n\nFrom previous encounters it is clear that each is very
familiar with these books. Any “discussion stimulators” (questions\, r
eflections\, etc. to be considered at the meeting) should be sent to me as
early as possible\, to tforb@core.com or (for GG &amp\; Gus\, neither of
 whom is on the internet) to 510 W Jefferson\, Petoskey\, 49770.\n\nAlso\,
please send in your suggestions for our December meeting. Per our prior de
cision\, this meeting would take place on Sunday\, December 11 – not the
usual fourth Sunday due to the holiday season. For that meeting I nominat
e: Don’t Even Think about It: Why our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate
Change\, by George Marshall – which among other features considers fact
ors of evolutionary psychology.\n\nFinally\, I am discontinuing my coordin
ator’s role in this group. The role consists primarily of receiving and
passing on any information (logistics\, books suggestions\, discussion sti
mulators\, etc.) to the 25 or so persons on the list. Hopefully someone wi
ll step forward to assume this role no later than at the next meeting. Tha
 nk you!

DESCRIPTION:The UU book group will meet  in the large second floor confere

heir Own Land:  Anger and Mourning on the American Right by Arlie Russell
  Hochschild (351 pp.).  The author\, a sociologist from Berkeley\, goes t
o Louisiana bayou and draws on her expert knowledge of the sociology of em
otion to help us understand what it feels like to live in “red” Americ
 a. Along the way she finds answers to one of the crucial  questions of co
ntemporary American politics: why do the people who would seem to benefit
most from “liberal” government intervention abhor the very idea?  Thi
s was a National Book Award finalist.  It should prove easier to read tha

DESCRIPTION:We’ll honor Pete Seeger\, singing many of his well-loved song
 s such as If I Had a Hammer\, Turn\, Turn\, Turn\, Where Have All the Flow
ers Gone and many others. All interested singers welcome\, no experience n
ecessary. Led by composer/guitarist Jim Scott\, who knew Pete well and col
laborated on many projects with the folk legend\, we’ll raise our voices
for the causes Pete championed and remember the great contributions to ou
r American heritage Pete made in his 94 years of life.\n\nJim Scott brings
a warmth\, and authenticity that turns any size audience into an intimate
gathering. His lyrical melodies\, well-crafted words\, guitar mastery and
humorous surprises moved Pete Seeger to call him “Some kind of a magici
an.” Known to many as guitarist with the Paul Winter Consort and co-comp
oser of their celebrated "Missa Gaia / Earth Mass\," Jim is a prolific com
poser in his own right. Jim's visited more than 700 UU churches over three
decades of travels. His much loved "Gather the Spirit" and other songs ar
e in the UU hymnbooks. He has also become a student of the movement for pe
ace and justice in song\, compiling and arranging the “Earth and Spirit
Songbook\,” a collection of over 110 songs of earth and peace by many co
ntemporary composers\, including Pete Seeger. For more about Jim\, visit w

$10-20. Children and students are free. All are welcome. Please come and b

DESCRIPTION:From Tom Beukema:\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen the library does re-open\, I
intend to schedule on a Sunday afternoon about two weeks later\, in the ba

windowless – would allow us to spread out more and hopefully to retain
“social distance”.\n\nSo far we have four nominations for our subseque
nt reading. The deadline for such nominations was to have expired today\,
but I am extending it for another week. As always\, please send them in by
phone (preferred\; 231.347.3802)\, email (tforb@core.com)\, or snail mail
  (510 W Jefferson Petoskey 49770).\n\nStay involved\, and stay safe.\n\n&n

experience. Sounds like a lot to explore so we invite you to read the boo

SUMMARY:January Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:While numbering few\, we had a lengthy discussion about our las
t  selection\, Love Your Enemies: How Decent People Can Save America from
the Culture of Contempt by Arthur C. Brooks.  All of us recounted person
al experiences which reified many of the points Brooks had made.   Howeve

join us did not do so.  Many thanks to Kim Nowak for hosting the meeting\
, and to Marla Houghteling for facilitating the discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\
nEach of the seven books nominated for our January discussion received sup
port.  In a very close vote we selected The System: Who Rigged It\, How W
e Fix It by Robert B. Reich.  It is a relatively short book\; and the adv
ent of winter\, along with Covid-induced isolation\, should allow us each
plenty of time to get through it.\nAt this point I anticipate that our nex

SUMMARY:July 25 Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nThe April 25 UUCOP Book Group drew seven active parti
cipants. We had a somewhat lengthy and far-reaching discussion about Ten L
essons for a Post-Pandemic World by Fareed Zakaria – although we did not
actually discuss every “lesson”.\n\nFor out next meeting\, set for 1:
30 p.m. Sunday\, July 25\, we selected The Human Cosmos: Civilization and
the Stars by Jo Marchant by consensus (almost!). You can find it in the Pe
toskey Library.\n\nAll of us preferred that our July 25 meeting take place
  “live” - i.e\, face-to-face without Zoom. As previously reported\, I
had booked a room in the Carnegie Building. The space should be sufficient
ly large to allow twenty of us to maintain safe distance from each other.
An option preferred by some of us consists of the large meeting room in th
e Library basement. While its safe-distance capacity is smaller\, restroom
s are on the same floor and more readily accessible.\n\nBy the time of the
meeting all of us will likely have had the opportunity to receive the Cov
id vaccine. Just in case\, masks would be required for meeting attendance.
\n\nThe in-person option is subject to change. Only 20% of those on our ma
iling list attended today's meeting\, and I can understand that some of yo
 u might have safety-related inhibitions about a face-to-face discussion. P
lease let me know about your preference for face-to-face versus Zoom\, esp
ecially if you strongly prefer the latter.\n\nFinally\, feel free to sugge
st any non-fiction work which you think would be a “good read” for our
October meeting. Already we have one suggestion!\n\nSo much I look forwar
d to the time when we all can\, again\, safely see each other without soft
 ware\, cameras\, and microphones.\n\nTom Beukema\,\nBook Group coordinator

SUMMARY:January Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nFor our January 23\, 2022 meeting we selected The Sa
cred Depths of Nature by Ursula Goodenough in a close vote. As the primary
suggestor of the work\, I'll plan to serve as discussion leader on 1/23/2
2.\nOur October 30th meeting had a far-reaching discussion about Quiet. Al
l four of us self-identified ourselves primarily as introverts. Unsurprisi
ngly some personal history came out during the discussion. I think we all
wondered how the discussion might have varied if someone relatively more e
xtroverted had joined us.\n\nFinally\, we briefly discussed the option of
holding our meeting in someone's home\, which had been the common practice
until about five years ago. Of course we would want to continue the Zoom
option. Hopefully a more informal\, homey atmosphere will attract more par
ticipation. On the other hand\, it could prove difficult to maintain “so
cial distance. What do you think about this option?\n\nTom Beukema\nCoo

SUMMARY:2022 Spring MDOT Highway Pickup
DESCRIPTION:\nOur congregation has adopted a two mile section of M119 just
south of Cross Village.  More detail is available here.\n\n\nThis spring
we'll meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Legs Inn parking lot for our Adopt A High
 way pickup.  If the group wishes\, we'll follow this with lunch.\n&nbsp\;
\n\nFast facts:\n- The first Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)
Adopt-A-Highway pickup of the year is April 23-May 1 for the Lower Peninsu
la.\n- Pickups for the Upper Peninsula will be from May 7 to 15.\n- Secti
ons of highway are still available to adopt. Go to www.Michigan.gov/Adopt
AHighway for more information.\n\nLANSING\, Mich. - Volunteers will f
an out across lower Michigan to give state highway roadsides their annual
spring cleaning beginning Saturday as groups in the Michigan Department of
Transportation (MDOT) Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program pick up litter from
April 23 to May 1.\n\nThe first AAH pickup for the Upper Peninsula will b
e later\, from May 7 to 15\, when spring has had more time to set in.\n\n"
We want to acknowledge the valuable service these thousands of Adopt-A-Hig
hway volunteers provide each year keeping our roadsides clean\," said Stat
e Transportation Director Paul C. Ajegba. "Their commitment to their commu
nities makes a huge difference across Michigan. We also remind motorists t
o keep an eye out for the volunteers and drive cautiously during the picku
 p periods."\n\nThe AAH program began in Michigan in 1990. Today\, around 2
\,900 groups have adopted more than 6\,000 miles of state highway. In a ty
pical year\, these volunteers collect 60\,000 to 70\,000 bags of trash ann
ually\, an estimated $5 million value for the state.\n\nVolunteers pick up
litter three times each year. Statewide\, there will be a summer pickup f
rom July 16 to 24 and a fall pickup from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2.\n\nAAH groups
wear high-visibility\, yellow-green safety vests required by federal regu
lations when working within a highway right of way. MDOT provides free ves
ts and trash bags\, and arranges to haul away the trash. Volunteers includ
e members of various civic groups\, businesses and families. Crew members
have to be at least 12 years old\, and each group must number at least thr
ee people.\n\nSections of highway are still available for adoption. Groups
are asked to adopt a section for at least two years. AAH signs bearing a
group's name are posted along the stretch of adopted highway. There is no
fee to participate.\n\nSeveral landfills in southwestern Michigan are also
chipping in to help the AAH program. Westside Landfill in St. Joseph Coun
ty\, C&amp\;C Landfill in Calhoun County\, Orchard Hill Landfill in Berrie
n County\, Southeast Berrien County Landfill near Niles\, and Republic Ser
vices Gembrit Circle Transfer Station in Kalamazoo have all agreed to acce
pt trash generated by the three annual AAH pickups at no charge. In exchan
ge\, these businesses receive a sign recognizing their support.

s you think would be a good read for our Group. If you do so\, please incl

also requested that you also submit a reasonably objective summary of your

in mind that we've decided to consider only non-fiction works.\n\nFinally\
, everyone's also encouraged to share questions or points of discussion
 – aka discussion stimulators – which come to mind as you read Talking
to Strangers. Any stimulators I (again) receive by July 16 will be sent to
everyone\, along with the list of suggested books\; but it's not required
that you submit stimulators in advance. Just bring them up at the meeting
itself. As the suggester of this book\, Marla Houghteling is invited to c

SUMMARY:July Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nAt our last meeting we had a better-than-usual turnout to
discuss Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don
't Know by Malcolm Gladwell. Occasionally the discussion became a bit spir
ited – but not at all loud or vehement - as a diversity of viewpoints &a
mp\; a couple of disagreements were expressed re certain aspects of Gladwe
ll's narrative. Thanks so much to Marla Houghteling\, who had suggested th
e work and who did a great job of facilitating the discussion.\n.\nFor our
next meeting we selected Defund Fear: Safety without Policing\, Prison\,
and Punishment by Zach Morris. It was suggested this time by Kim Nowack af
ter I'd suggested it four months ago. Thus Kim gets first dibs to facilita
te our discussion\, starting 1:30 p.m. Sunday\, July 24\, again in the bas
ement classroom at the Petoskey Library. You will also have the option of
joining us via Zoom. Defund Fear is the 2022 UUA Common Read\, so it shoul
d readily be available from the Bookstore at UUA.org.\n.\nThe selection vo
te was the closest yet during my tenure as Book Group coordinator\, just b
arely winning out over Utopia for Realists: How We can Build an Ideal Worl
d by Rutger Bregman. This despite only three books suggested! It leads me
to wonder whether it should become the default selection for our October m

nuary 29\, 2023. Keep in mind that we well be meeting only c/o Zoom.\n\nA
nd\, have you yet acquired our next selection\, The 1619 Project: A New
Origin Story\, created &amp\; edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones? I have sugge
sted to our local bookstore\, MeLean and Aiken\, that they stock a few cop
ies for you to purchase\; and I am confident that copies are available thr
ough the regional library system. As always\, remember to jot down thought
s or questions which come to mind as you are reading for “discussion sti
mulators” at the meeting.\n\nYou might recall that the vote at our last
(October) meeting to select The 1619 Project was very close. So those
present agreed by consensus to select the runner-up\, The Secret Life of
Secrets: How Our Inner Worlds Shape Well-being\, Relationships\, and Who W
e Are by Michael Slepian\, should be selected for our April meeting. Sinc
e then i've received no objections to this decision\, nor any other bo
ok suggestions. You might recall that about a year ago we made the same de
cision after another close vote.\n\nHowever\, as far as i'm concerned\, yo
u still have the right to suggest an alternate work for our April meeting.
But you must make certain that i receive your recommendation no late

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Well\, have you marked your calendar for the next meeting of th
e UUCOP Book Group yet.  If not\, better hurry!  It’s less than eight
 weeks from today\, 12:30 p.m. Sunday\, October 22.\nOur current selection
\, The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Mi
nds and Our World by Max Fisher\, is a challenging read re a critically i
mportant subject.  As promised\, i alerted McLean &amp\; Aiken re our sel
ection.  The Petoskey Library has a copy in its cases of new acquisitions
  (main lobby/checkout area)\, &amp\; no doubt many other libraries &amp\;
bookstores have copies.\nWhen i emailed you all re the selection of The C
haos Machine\, i also requested your opinion about whether to try loose
ning our non-fiction-only policy - on a trial basis - in order to allow n
ominations (suggestions\, etc.) of historical or biographical fiction.
Only one of you replied – albeit infinitely higher than nominations for
Oct 22 received so far.  The respondent opined that we should try allow
ing such works.  While seconding that motion\, a sample of 2 – of about
35 folks on our mailing list - seems far too low for any sustained change
s.\nSo let’s compromise.  For our upcoming meeting it’s OK to sugges
t (recommend\, etc) historical or biographical fiction.  For now i’m d
efining those categories only to include works which identify actual pe
ople who were key players in the events described.  In most such works i
’ve read the author append actual sources (news articles\, letters\, i
nterviews with survivors\, etc.) of characters’ names\, specific events\
, &amp\; so on.\nPerhaps this pilot change might enhance the number of r
ecommended (nominated\, etc.) books.  For one I’m nominating 1 (2?) suc
h piece as well as 1 strictly non-fiction work.  Whichever you choose\, p
lease get your nominations (suggestions\, etc.) to me ASAP tforb@core.co
m.\nAlong with them\, feel free to share your preference re whether to ado
pt\, extend the trial of\, or just forget the suggested change.  Thank yo
 u all\, &amp\; good reading.\ntom beukema\nBook Group coordinator

SUMMARY:Book Group Meets
DESCRIPTION:Hi\, fellow UU Book Groupies\,\nTwo reminders.  First\, have y
ou read or are you reading the work selected for our next meeting at 1:30
p.m. Sunday\, April 28 in the basement reading room at the Petoskey L
ibrary?  Yes\, the Zoom option will be available via our website.\nThe se
lection\, or course\, is The Heat Will Kill You First by Jeff Goodell.
As of a week ago McLean &amp\; Eakin still has copies.  As always\, let m
e know  tforb@core.com) re any questions or points you’d like to discu
ss at our meeting.\nSecond\, so far i’ve not received any nominations
(recommendations\, suggestions\, etc.) of books for our July 28 meeting.
I’ve nominated one &amp\; am considering another\, but I’m sure that
you all would prefer to have works reflecting your own &amp\;/or others’
perspectives.  Non-fiction only.  Please provide the book’s publicati
on date &amp\; length\, and also a 100-word or so summary of its content.
Please get them to me no later than Saturday\, April 20.\nSo hoping to
see all of you on 4/28\, if not earlier.  We have a mailing list of so
me 35 people\, but live + Zoom attendance rarely exceeds 8-10.  And The
Heat Will Kill You First is both readable &amp\; educational re a most
 important subject.\nHave a joyful spring!\ntom beukema\nBook Group coordin

DESCRIPTION:At the last book group meeting we had a wide-ranging discussion

ieties\, etc) can complicate matters.\n\n.\n\nThe read for our October mee
ting is James by Percival Everett – the first work of fiction selected o
ur Book Group. On Tyranny: 20 lessons from the 20th Century\, by Timothy S
nyder will be the book for our December meeting. Therefore nominations of
works for our February ’26 meeting won’t be due until early December.\
